{"id":4690,"date":"2025-12-16T02:25:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T01:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cefoindigena.org\/the-importance-of-free-prior-and-informed-consent-for-the-defense-of-indigenous-territories\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T02:25:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T01:25:14","slug":"the-importance-of-free-prior-and-informed-consent-for-the-defense-of-indigenous-territories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cefoindigena.org\/en\/the-importance-of-free-prior-and-informed-consent-for-the-defense-of-indigenous-territories\/","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent for the Defense of Indigenous Territories"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cefoindigena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/IMAGEN-BLOG-CPLI-1024x537.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7355\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abConflicts in the territory begin when prior consultation is not applied\u00bb declared <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/robert.guimaraesvasquez.5\" target=\"_blank\">Miguel Guimar\u00e3es V\u00e1squez<\/a>, vice president of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aidesep.org.pe\/\" target=\"_blank\">AIDESEPs<\/a>, an Amazonian indigenous organization in Peru, who participated in the ISEAL-led FPIC360 <em>webinar <\/em>with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.equitableorigin.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Equitable Origin<\/a>\u00b4s participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The webinar was called \u00abMonitoring of Prior, Free and Informed Consultation (FPIC) 360\u00bb, it brought together leading specialists on the subject and made the FPIC 360 digital tool available to Indigenous Organizations, one of the most effective mechanisms to monitor and alert in cases in which the right to Prior Consultation is not respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abThe FPIC360 tool is a platform for monitoring and controlling the application of the Right to Free, Prior and Informed Consultation, in projects or activities that involve them or may affect them directly or indirectly,\u00bb said Soledad Mills, director of Equitable Origin, referring to the native Amazonian communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of the FPIC-360\u00b0 tool was possible thanks to a grant from the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isealalliance.org\/innovations-standards\/iseal-innovations-fund\" target=\"_blank\">ISEAL Innovations Fund<\/a>, which is supported by the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seco-cooperation.admin.ch\/secocoop\/en\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs<\/a>\u00a0SECO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/robert.guimaraesvasquez.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guimar\u00e3es<\/a> pointed out that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aidesep.org.pe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AIDESEPs<\/a> has identified the Peruvian departments of Ucayali, Pasco, Jun\u00edn, Madre de Dios, Loreto and San Mart\u00edn as the places in which, in addition to problems associated with the non-application of a Free Prior and Informed Consultation, the life of indigenous Amazonian communities is threatened by drug trafficking and illegal logging. The defense of their human rights has become a matter of life or death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An environmental defender, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/robert.guimaraesvasquez.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miguel Guimar\u00e3es<\/a> is native to the Flor de Ucayali community of the Shipibo people in the region of the same name. He has experienced persecution by drug mafias and loggers who harass him at every turn, putting his life and that of his family at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the danger it represents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/robert.guimaraesvasquez.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guimar\u00e3es<\/a> decided to participate in this virtual event to make people aware of the terrible situation which several environmental defenders are going through; \u201cIn addition to drug trafficking and illegal logging, there is the invasion of territories and with it the dispossession of entire communities, agrobusiness with the oil palm industry and the famous oil development that has been present in Peru for more than 50 years devoid of any real benefits for endemic communities. In other words, there is an enormous debt and responsibility on the part of the government towards Indigenous Communities,\u201d he said.
