What development alternatives exist for indigenous peoples that come from within? There is no single answer to this question, but when analyzing the options, those projects that are transversal, practical and that come from within, stand out. Bioenterprise initiatives meet these criteria, which is why they have gained so much relevance in recent years. A Bioenterprise is much more than an invented word, and it\u2019s more than just a fashionable expression. Nowadays, a web search for the term returns more than 40,000 results, which in turn lead us to pages about news, calls, and other announcements related to the topic. The reality is that, in some way, Bioenterprises represent a new paradigm in the field of environmental conservation and strengthening of indigenous cultures. Gone are the days where a dogmatic vision of environmental conservation prevailed, in which there was no space for the conservation and strengthening of the indigenous cultures that inhabit the territories. It is becoming increasingly clear that it is necessary to see environmental and cultural conservation as two sides of the same coin. Bioenterprise initiatives represent this vision, one that puts at the center the immense cultural value of products from indigenous communities. The benefit of promoting these types of products is twofold. On one hand, it contributes to the family economy, and on the other, they create a new source of income that is independent of the exploitation of natural resources, reducing the pressure on the forests. Additionally, throughout these initiatives, the cultures and worldview of indigenous peoples are strengthened.<\/p>\n
Fundaci\u00f3n Ra\u00edz , aliado estrat\u00e9gico de Equitable Origin y el CEFO ind\u00edgena en Ecuador, ha venido ejecutando desde junio del 2021 un proyecto de fortalecimiento de Bioemprendimientos en comunidades ind\u00edgenas Sionas y Siekopai en la Amazon\u00eda . Este proyecto tiene el apoyo del Programa de Peque\u00f1as Donaciones del PNUD Ecuador, del Programa de Apoyo al SNAP del Ministerio del Ambiente, Agua y Transici\u00f3n Ecol\u00f3gica y la Cooperaci\u00f3n Financiera Alemana. Este proyecto est\u00e1 enfocado en sacar adelante bioemprendimientos basados en la yuca ( Manioc esculenta) y el chontaduro ( Bactris gasipaes) , dos cultivos fundamentales tanto para las culturas Siona y Siekopai como para la gran mayor\u00eda de culturas Ind\u00edgenas amaz\u00f3nicas. El proyecto est\u00e1 enfocado en 3 principales ejes de acci\u00f3n: la revalorizaci\u00f3n de las chakras (huertos ind\u00edgenas biodiversos), el fortalecimiento organizativo de asociaciones productivas de mujeres, y la capacitaci\u00f3n gastron\u00f3mica para la transformaci\u00f3n de productos e implementaci\u00f3n de buenas pr\u00e1cticas sanitarias y de producci\u00f3n. Como actor clave en el territorio est\u00e1 la Asociaci\u00f3n de mujeres de Waiya \u201cASOPROASIENW\u201d , representada por Leorvis Piaguaje, previamente entrevistada por el CEFO dentro del segmento Voces Ind\u00edgenas.<\/p>\n
Esta Asociaci\u00f3n elabora productos en base a la yuca y est\u00e1 comercializando desde hace poco m\u00e1s de 3 a\u00f1os el Neapia, una salsa de aj\u00ed t\u00edpica del pueblo Siekopai pero que tambi\u00e9n se elabora en otros pueblos amaz\u00f3nicos bajo el nombre de tucupi negro, kumaji, aj\u00ed negro, kanyzi pudidy y cassareep. Durante los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, esta salsa ha ganado prominencia y ha llamado la atenci\u00f3n de chefs debido a su caracter\u00edstica umami, el denominado \u201cquinto sabor\u201d. Ra\u00edz est\u00e1 trabajando en conjunto con la asociaci\u00f3n para comercializar este producto y posicionarlo en el mercado. Una caracter\u00edstica que se destaca del proyecto ha sido la asociatividad y su aplicaci\u00f3n pr\u00e1ctica. Fundaci\u00f3n Ra\u00edz ha trabajado con otras ONGs, instituciones p\u00fablicas, gobiernos locales, y el sector privado en actividades varias para el fortalecimiento de cadenas productivas dentro de comunidades. Junto con espai-epicur , por ejemplo, se capacit\u00f3 a 12 j\u00f3venes de comunidades, de los cuales 6 estuvieron becados con fondos administrados por Fundaci\u00f3n Ra\u00edz y 6 por fondos de Fundaci\u00f3n Centro Lianas , organizaci\u00f3n que trabaja en piscicultura nativa en comunidades ind\u00edgenas. Esta beca le brind\u00f3 una perspectiva \u00fanica y nuevas habilidades a gestores de comunidades, quienes fueron capacitados en Quito no solo en temas gastron\u00f3micos sino tambi\u00e9n administrativos, contables y de gesti\u00f3n. Articulado a la beca y al proyecto como tal, se desarroll\u00f3 el evento Latitud Cero , un evento celebrado anualmente que en su \u00faltima fase tuvo el concepto \u201cDe la selva a la mesa\u201d. Este evento fue una oportunidad para darle realce a ingredientes que no son solo de la selva, sino que son producto de procesos culturales milenarios llevados a cabo por comunidades ind\u00edgenas. Otra instancia donde la asociatividad se puso en pr\u00e1ctica fue durante la construcci\u00f3n de un centro de acopio en la comunidad de Waiya. Este centro fue construido con fondos de dos ONGs aliadas a Ra\u00edz, Fundaci\u00f3n Alianza Ceibo y Rainforest Foundation mediante el programa Amazon Emergency Fund (AEF) . Adicionalmente, Ra\u00edz trabaj\u00f3 junto con el GAD de la provincia de Sucumb\u00edos para la adecuaci\u00f3n del terreno y la organizaci\u00f3n de un evento de inauguraci\u00f3n. Ra\u00edz continuar\u00e1 trabajando en este proyecto, mediante acciones que lleven al posicionamiento de los bioemprendimientos y las asociaciones que los respaldan, enfoc\u00e1ndose en su sostenibilidad.<\/p>\n
The key to the success and current relevance of Bioenterprises as an approach revolves around one concept: the revaluation of indigenous products. These products tell a story, and their value lies in both their own characteristics and in the context in which they are conceived. Behind each bioenterprise there are cultural practices and expressions of the worldview of indigenous peoples. These practices are thousands of years old and go hand in hand with processes of relevance and impact worldwide, such as the domestication of species or the creation of tools for the transformation of raw materials. The dissemination of these bioenterprises can open the door to the general public to a world of cultural and environmental richness, but also of struggle. This last point is extremely important, since women are almost always behind Bioenterprise initiatives, women who for a long time have played a secondary role within their communities, being economically marginalized due to their exclusion from the jobs offered by extractive industries and monoculture agriculture deep into the territory. Jobs that have been occupied mainly -if not exclusively- by men. With bioenterprises, women from indigenous communities have an opportunity to get ahead, closing that social and economic gap inside and outside the communities, and fostering in the process a new and strong appreciation for their own products and the processes that sustain them.<\/p>\n
