The Vice-Coordinator of the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA) and Coordinator of the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities, Tuntiak Shuar, positioned the demands of the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon at COP26 during the meetings in Glasgow, UK. Tuntiak pointed out 5 requirements:
1. The need to respect territorial rights.
2. To not criminalize leaders who defend the Amazon.
3. Direct financing to Indigenous Peoples and their organizations of the for the protection of their territories
4. All strategies for the defense of the territory need to have the consent of Indigenous Peoples who are involved.
5. Governments must recognize the contributions of the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon .
The voice of the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon must be respected! It is time to take concrete action!
