Since 1983, every September 5 the International Day of Indigenous Women is commemorated, to honor the memory of Bartolina Sisa. Bartolina Sisa was an Aymara warrior who fought against colonial domination and who together with the brave Tupac Katari organized the indigenous resistance. She was tortured and murdered in 1782 at the hands of the Spanish yoke.
